Procrastination
People procrastinate
for two main reasons:
- They feel overwhelmed
by the task. The task seems too big to be possible.
- By putting a task
off to the last possible instance and then slamming it together
the night before the deadline, they don't have to put all of their
self-esteem on the line.
In the first situation
a learner can start by breaking the task into smaller 'bite size'
chunks and deal with one little chunk at a time. For the second
situation some of us learned at an early age that it was less risky
to commit just a bit of our skill to a particular task and be criticized,
than to put our whole being on the line and be criticized. Put fear
aside, and get your work done early or at least on time.
- Identify a task that
you have been putting off or avoiding at work or at home.
- Break the task into
steps. Is there a part of the task, a single small step, that
you could do this week? Tomorrow? What about today?
- Do it! How do you
feel about the larger task now?
