Elluminate Information

What Is Elluminate?

Elluminate is a powerful and easy-to-use web-conferencing software that can be used for:

 Meetings  Classroom collaboration
Virtual office hours  Student and parent orientation
Live instruction  Remote guest speakers and virtual field trips
 Content development  Professional development
 Tutoring programs  Virtual help desk

The Elluminate suite consists of the following:

Elluminate Live: Used for live, online, multi-media, many-to-many classes, meetings, and collaborations. This page and its associated documents are primarily about this application.

Elluminate Plan: Used to load pre-recorded sessions. The sessions can be recorded and saved on Elluminate’s servers, and the saved sessions can be viewed by anyone who has the links.

Elluminate Publish: Used to move content off Elluminate and save it on another server.

Elluminate and the Colleges

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) has purchased a single installation of Elluminate that is free, unlimited and available to anyone in our system. The license allows unlimited use of Elluminate Live, Plan and Publish. The installation is hosted by Elluminate and managed by WashingtonOnline (WAOL) staff. Your college does not have to use WAOL to deliver courses to use WAOL Elluminate.

If you use Elluminate on your campus, you will be responsible for managing and supporting it. All Elluminate information from WAOL will go by default to the eLearning Coordinator (ELC) on each campus; however, you can designate someone besides the ELC to receive the information.

Overview of Elluminate Training

Before your college asks WAOL for an Elluminate account, your eLearning Coordinator (ELC) needs to take the two online moderator classes offered by Elluminate. WAOL also suggests colleges require training of anyone who gets an account through a college. If needed, Elluminate users can request further training on Elluminate from WAOL staff. To do so, contact Connie Broughton.

Once someone at your college is comfortable with Elluminate, and the WAOL installation is complete, you can request Elluminate for your school. Each college will determine when to offer Elluminate to the faculty or staff; will control emails to faculty and staff regarding Elluminate; will be in charge of their training, and will support its users.

Elluminate offers frequent, free, online, live training for all levels of users. The classes and resources offered by Elluminate are:

To access the training, go to the Live Online Events page on the Elluminate site.

When you sign up for the training, you will be prompted to create an account. That account is with Elluminate, and WAOL has no access to it nor will it give a person access to WAOL Elluminate.

Obtaining a WAOL Elluminate Account

To get your own Elluminate account on WAOL Elluminate, take the required training and then work with your college Elluminate administrator. Your eLearning office will know who that is on your campus. Once you have your own Elluminate account, you can create sessions whenever you want. Or you can create an Elluminate virtual office that will always be available for you and anyone you invite. To set up an Elluminate virtual office, follow these instructions. Microsoft Word file

Troubleshooting

If you have trouble connecting to Elluminate from your college, here is some information directly from Elluminate Support that may help:

Note:

  • Only authorized clients may connect to an Elluminate Live! Server
  • The connection is always initiated from the client
  • After connection, only the Elluminate Live! server will send data to the client

Since Elluminate uses dynamic server assignment, it is not possible to state in advance precisely which server will host a session. This means the IP Address is known only when the session actually starts. As a result, please ensure firewalls (and proxy systems) allow access to the entire set of Elluminate hosts in the domain elluminate.com and to the following IP Address ranges:

  • 216.220.49.208 with netmask 255.255.255.240 (in CIDR notation: 216.220.49.208/28)
  • 65.110.166.160 with netmask 255.255.255.224 (in CIDR notation: 65.110.166.160/27)
  • 74.200.25.224 with netmask 255.255.255.224 (in CIDR notation 74.200.25.224/27)

Enabling access to both of the address blocks listed will reduce the impact of any configuration changes that Elluminate might make.
